I have been baking sourdough loaves for my family for around 4 years now. A close friend of mine gave me a jar of starter and suggested that I would enjoy the sourdough process and bread making and how right she was!

I then baked for her family and friends over the next few years until March 2020 when the Covid-19 lock down was looming and flour was in short supply. The same friend persuaded me to be brave to reach out to my street (Featherstone Road) and ask for flour in exchange for a loaf, so that I could keep my starter fed and healthy. I received some very enthusiastic responses and lots of bags of flour on the doorstep!

Then a very thoughtful neighbour managed to book a delivery slot from Shipton Mill and ordered and delivered a 16kg bag of flour to my door allowing me to start properly baking for the road. A happy road it was indeed during lockdown and the Summer that followed. But they are a lovely bunch on Featherstone Road.

Since then the business has grown via word of mouth, good friends, and supportive neighbours. The business was still nameless, and friends and neighbours came up with lots of different ideas, but Featherstone Bread was the one that I liked the most as it reflects the beginnings of the business and where it all began.

In August I received the news that I was to be made redundant from my day job so Featherstone Bread became a business reality and now here I am making loaves every week for Kings Heath and the surrounding area and the rest, as they say is history.
